2 seeded players lose to qualifiers in Adelaide


ADELAIDE, Australia — Former French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova and Beatriz Haddad Maia misplaced their first-round matches Monday on the Adelaide Worldwide.

Qualifier Anna Kalinskaya beat 2021 Roland Garros winner and No. 4-seeded Krejcikova 7-5, 3-6, 7-5. Kalinskaya had three match factors on Krejcikova’s serve when main 6-5 within the deciding set and transformed the third for the win.

Former French Open finalist Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova breezed by qualifying and beat fifth-seeded Haddad Maia 6-3, 6-4.

The joint WTA-ATP event is the largest tune-up occasion this week for the Australian Open, which begins on Sunday at Melbourne Park.

In one other first-round Adelaide end result, Ana Bogdan beat Katie Boulter, who represented Britain eventually week’s United Cup event, 6-3, 6-4.

“(Collins is) positively a troublesome opponent within the first spherical. She will positively strike the ball very onerous,” Mertens mentioned. “The climate was in my benefit, just a little bit extra wind.”

The Belgian participant subsequent faces Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova, who beat fellow qualifier Camila Osorio 1-6, 7-6 (4), 7-5.
