Following yesterday’s cheeky teaser trailer, the Mortal Kombat 2 film’s prepared for its full reveal, with two-and-a-half minutes of silliness, somewhat little bit of splatter, and loads of Johnny Cage.
A follow-up to 2021’s mildly diverting live-action Mortal Kombat film was introduced all the best way again in January 2021, with Jeremy Slater – head author on Disney+’s Moon Knight collection – confirmed to be dealing with the script. Simon McQuoid stays on directing duties after helming the primary film, and the intervening years have introduced varied bits of casting information.
Prime of the listing, after all, is The Boys star Karl City, who’s entering into the high-kicking boots of collection icon Johnny Cage. This time round, it is Cage who’s sucked via a portal and into the world of Mortal Kombat (Lewis Tan’s Cole Younger, who had an analogous expertise within the first film is again too), and there is loads of Cage in as we speak’s Mortal Kombat 2 reveal trailer.
It is totally daft stuff, leaning firmly into the pulpy ridiculousness of all of it, even when the included Fatalities – which have been moderately underrepresented within the film – aren’t maybe as outlandish as you would possibly hope for. Nonetheless, who can resist a traditional little bit of shock bifurcation, eh?
Mortal Kombat 2 additionally stars the likes of Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade, Adeline Rudolph as Kitana, Ludi Lin as Liu Kang, Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Briggs, CJ Bloomfield as Baraka, Tati Gabrielle as Jade, Chin Han as Shang Tsung, Hiroyuki Sanada as Hanzo Hasashi/Scorpion, and Max Huang as Kung Lao. And if all that appeals, it is out in cinemas on twenty fourth October.
Eurogamer’s former editor-in-chief Wesley Yin-Poole wasn’t overly eager on the primary Mortal Kombat movie, saying, “There’s simply sufficient low-rent leisure to forestall [it] from being an entire catastrophe” in his evaluate. So fingers crossed for the sequel.
