Remembering Boxing Judge and Friend Steve Morrow

By Eric Bottjer

This one is essential. And it hurts. Steve Morrow has departed. Chances are you’ll know the identify – Steve was a longtime California boxing choose who grew to become a part of the WBC household. And in the event you really knew Steve – at any degree – at this time is for processing his loss.

I met Steve in 1989. I moved to Gilroy, California, simply out of journalism faculty, working on the native paper, The Dispatch. The editor put me on the Metropolis Corridor beat. Huge mistake. A fantastic reporter from the neighboring San Jose Mercury Information named Jack Foley routinely kicked my ass (scooped me).

After which a fortunate break. The police and courts reporter was departing and the editor, in desperation, tossed me in her place (Perrin Weston, HUGE footwear to fill, and never as a result of her toes have been large). Quickly, I used to be kicking Jack’s ass (which I’m type of happy with, as Jack Foley shared a Pulitzer with fellow Mercury reporters in 1989). And I used to be utilizing my press badge to sneak into native fights.

One evening at a Joe Gagliardi San Jose present, there was an incredible 4-rounder that ended with followers littering the ring with cash (for the fighters). I seen a gaggle of men within the low cost seats who gave the impression to be aiming their cash at my ringside seat (the place I occurred to be sitting).

Stupidly fearless, I went to confront them. And there they have been – six Gilroy cops, Steve Morrow amongst them. It was a real significant second (for me). I gained the belief of many of the division (“He’s a superb child. He likes boxing”), and these officers graciously allowed me glimpses into their world, giving me credibility not solely with them, however with my journalism friends, as these cops fed me information that allowed me to write down some significant tales (I knew I used to be just about accepted by the power when the cops there began calling me “Jimmy Olsen” – nicknames have been large with them).

Steve was not their chief, but it surely was he who I grew to become closest to. Steve was a totally respectable man who “obtained” life and what the which means of life can (and may) be – serving to others. He wrote occasional columns for The Dispatch, explaining his job to the 40,000 of us who populated Gilroy. There’s little question Steve was a troublesome man, however within the many ridealongs I did with Steve and different officers, he by no means was aggressive with individuals, and lots of of these individuals weren’t completely happy to see Steve and his fellow officers. I discovered a superb officer diffuses disputes and treats everybody the identical, no matter their private emotions (cops encounter horrid conduct from some of us). Even after I encountered an occasional officer I didn’t take care of, Steve humanized them for me. And I do know he humanized me to them (cops and reporters have a pure adversarial work relationship).

All that Steve did for me, essentially the most gracious act he carried out in my younger life was permitting me to assist him. I wrote a column for Virgil Thrasher’s glorious commerce publication Boxing Replace (and it’s sister publication, “Flash”), and Steve requested me how he may do some writing. I launched him to Virgil and Steve lined boxing for eight years, going to all of the Northern California occasions and producing ringside experiences.

Within the midst of that, advised me he’s wish to attempt judging. I spoke to Dean Lohuis on the fee, who helped Steve enter that world. The primary time I noticed Steve’s smiling mug on HBO as a ringside choose for a title battle, I felt like a proud youthful brother.

I don’t take credit score for Steve’s entry into boxing. He would have discovered his path, even when we by no means met. However I’m so glad we met. I really like him a lot.
