Things I Am Thankful For

Thanksgiving is, no doubt, my favourite vacation. Taking a day to pause and take time away from the day by day grind to share a scrumptious home made meal with household and associates has all the time stuffed me with gratitude. And this 12 months, as my total household gathers at my son’s home in Durango, Colorado, for my granddaughter Kelly Jo’s first Thanksgiving, I’m notably grateful.

›Wanting again over the previous 12 months since we final gathered, I’m particularly grateful for my bodily well being, the alternatives I’ve had and challenges I’ve confronted, and my communities, each close to and much.

Bodily Well being

Again in 2023, shortly after relocating again to Arizona, I underwent two important hip alternative surgical procedures. I had my left hip changed in February and my proper hip changed in October. On the time, I used to be hopeful of a return to operating, however it actually wasn’t a given. My restoration progressed all through 2024, and I’ve been blessed with full bodily well being over the previous 12 months. Undoubtedly, the surgical procedures brought about me to lose a step — or six — however for probably the most half, I’ve been in a position to run constantly all year long. On the time of this writing, my annual mileage sits at 2,750, giving me a reasonably good probability of ending the 12 months with simply over 3,000 miles.

Alternatives and Challenges

On the finish of 2023, whereas recovering from the aforementioned hip surgical procedures, I left my 34-year profession in schooling to embark on a brand new profession engrossed on the earth of operating. On the time, I hoped to cobble collectively a dwelling via teaching, writing, podcasting, and dealing part-time in a neighborhood operating store. As luck would have it, on the finish of 2024, I used to be provided a full-time job managing the Sole Sports activities Tempe operating store, and have been doing so for just below a 12 months. I’m additionally persevering with with my teaching, podcasting, and writing. Whereas this actually was not a part of the long-term plan, I’m grateful to everybody who has supported me in these new endeavors over the previous 12 months. It’s been each extremely difficult and justifiably rewarding.

Group

Any of us who’ve been across the path operating and ultrarunning world for any time frame understands the robust sense of group that the game engenders. Right here in Arizona, the path operating group is especially vibrant, thanks partially to the unimaginable work of Aravaipa Working, in addition to a handful of different, lesser-known leaders locally. The folks I’ve met and the relationships I’ve solid are a number of the most significant in my life. Moreover, my work within the writing and podcasting area has allowed me to broaden my group worldwide, and I’m so extremely grateful for all of the individuals who help my work right here at iRunFar and with my podcast, Crack a Brew with AJW.

With all of this gratitude, it’s a marvel to consider what could lie forward between now and Thanksgiving in 2026. What I do know is I look ahead to one other 12 months of operating pain-free, having fun with the alternatives of writing, podcasting, and training, and persevering with to embrace the group that makes our sport so uniquely particular.

Bottoms up!
