Hockey Australia is saddened to be taught of the passing of considered one of Australian hockey’s most interesting umpires, Gordon Getley.
Gordon’s dedication to hockey was unprecedented and his 40-year dedication to umpiring the sport noticed him awarded his Australian umpiring badge in 1969 and a world grade 1 badge in 1979.
At a world stage, Gordon’s worldwide appointments included a New Zealand worldwide tour, a pre-Olympic match and the Manning Cup Collection whereas at a nationwide stage, Gordon adjudicated Nationwide Championships from 1971-1982, together with six finals appearances, as he amassed near 300 State League umpiring appearances and 13 finals appearances.
Gordon was a stalwart within the sport and his dedication to hockey continued after his on-field profession as he took on roles as President of Hockey WA and Chairman of the Girls’s World Cup organizing committee in Perth in 2002.
Gordon is a Life Member of Hockey WA and obtained his Hockey Australia Award of Advantage for his service to hockey in 1985.
Hockey Australia extends its deepest condolences to the Getley household, Gordon’s pals, and the Hockey WA Neighborhood.
