A Super Bowl Halftime Performer Surprised Organizers With a Sudan-Gaza Flag

There it was, within the nook of the display screen throughout the climactic second of Kendrick Lamar’s Tremendous Bowl halftime present on Sunday: A protester unfurling a mixed Palestinian and Sudanese flag simply as Lamar — and your entire stadium — sang the “it’s in all probability A-minooooor” punchline from his chart-topping diss observe “Not Like Us.”

The N.F.L. stated in a press release that the protester was a part of the 400-member discipline solid.

“The person hid the merchandise on his possession and unveiled it late within the present,” the league stated. “Nobody concerned with the manufacturing was conscious of the person’s intent.”

A consultant for Roc Nation, the leisure firm behind the halftime present, stated in a press release, “The act by the person was neither deliberate nor a part of the manufacturing and was by no means in any rehearsal.”

Amid the handfuls of dancers in pink, white, blue and black, the person might be seen standing on the hood of the stage’s centerpiece, a Buick Grand Nationwide GNX, the uncommon automotive for which Lamar named his newest album, “GNX.” Photographs from the bottom and clips on social media confirmed an individual in black sweats — matching the extras onstage — with “Sudan” and “Gaza” written on the white swath of the flags, alongside a coronary heart and a solidarity fist.

As Lamar transitioned into his remaining music, “TV Off,” from “GNX,” the flag-bearer might be seen leaping from the automotive and leaving the stage, working in circles with the flag waving in his fingers till being tackled by safety and faraway from the sector.

Emmanuel Morgan contributed reporting.
