Alexander Zverev out of United Cup mixed teams event with biceps injury


PERTH, Australia — World No. 2-ranked Alexander Zverev withdrew from the United Cup blended groups tennis event on Wednesday with a biceps pressure lower than two weeks from the beginning of the Australian Open.

The 27-year-old Zverev received his opening two singles matches of the season in opposition to Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro and China’s Zheng Zhizhen on the United Cup.

He was scheduled to face Alexander Shevchenko of Kazakhstan in Perth within the United Cup quarterfinals, however withdrew on the final minute with Kazakhstan main the tie 1-0 after Elena Rybakina beat Laura Siegemund 6-3, 6-1.

“Alexander Zverev has withdrawn from the United Cup as a result of a bicep pressure,” organizers stated. “Daniel Masur will take his place for Workforce Germany in right this moment’s singles match in opposition to Kazakhstan.”

Zverev has not received a Grand Slam singles title, ending as runner-up within the 2020 U.S. Open and the 2024 French Open. The Australian Open begins Jan. 12.
