Canada’s Leylah Fernandez was ousted within the opening spherical of the Tennis within the Land singles occasion in Cleveland after dropping 1-6, 7-6 (2), 6-2 to Romania’s Ana Bogdan on Tuesday.
Bogdan completed with 4 aces, no double faults and went seven of 17 saving break factors. Fernandez had three aces, 11 double faults and gained seven of eight break factors within the two-hour, 34-minute match.
Fernandez, who’s ranked twenty fourth, was the second seed within the WTA 250 event. The 21-year-old from Laval, Que., had zero aces and dedicated 12 double faults.
Fernandez and her sister Bianca then misplaced to Brazil’s Ingrid Martins and American Quinn Gleason in a round-of-16 girls’s doubles match on Tuesday evening. Martins and Gleason gained 6-4, 6-3 in 71 minutes.
In the meantime, Marina Stakusic of Mississauga, Ont., fell to Switzerland’s Celine Naef 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 within the first spherical of US Open qualifying. Vancouver’s Rebecca Marino beat Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium 6-2, 6-3 later Tuesday.
Marino and Canada’s Gabriel Diallo each play within the second spherical Wednesday. Gamers should win three qualifying matches to be assured a spot in the principle draw.
Elsewhere, Carol Zhao of Richmond Hill, Ont., misplaced 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-2 to Croatia’s Petra Martic within the spherical of 32 of the Monterrey Open.
