SHANGHAI — Denis Shapovalov, of Richmond Hill, Ont., defeated Italian Lorenzo Sonego 7-6 (5), 7-6 (8) within the first spherical of the Shanghai Masters on Wednesday.
Shapovalov, 25, now holds a 2-1 profession report in opposition to Sonego, ranked fiftieth on the earth. The victory marked the Canadian’s two hundredth profession win on tour.
Shapovalov recorded two aces in comparison with three for Sonego and made three double faults, whereas Sonego had two.
Ranked one hundred and first on the earth, Shapovalov will face the event’s sixteenth seed, American Ben Shelton, within the second spherical.
In the meantime, Montreal’s Gabriel Diallo fell 7-5, 7-6 (7) to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in his opening match of the ATP Masters 1000 event.
Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime, the 18th seed, will play France’s Alexandre Muller within the spherical of 64 on Thursday.
