Canada’s Leylah Fernandez faltered after a robust first set in a 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 loss to Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday within the quarterfinals of the Rothesay Traditional grass-court tennis match.
Fernandez, seeded sixth in Birmingham, received 82.6 per cent of first-serve factors and saved the one break level she confronted within the first set, whereas breaking Tomljanovic twice on 4 possibilities.
Tomljanovic responded and scored on each of her break factors within the second set, together with a key break to take a 4-2 lead.
The Australian constructed on that momentum within the third set, scoring two early breaks to take a 3-0 lead and cruising to victory from there.
Fernandez was taking part in in her first grass-court match of the season.
