Jack Del Rio resigns as Wisconsin senior adviser after arrest


Former NFL coach Jack Del Rio resigned from his position as a senior adviser for Wisconsin’s soccer program after he was arrested Friday on a first-offense cost of working a car whereas intoxicated.

“He’s going to maneuver ahead and he’s going to resign and transfer on,” Wisconsin coach Luke Fickell stated in a information convention Monday. “But it surely’s a troublesome state of affairs, choices that each one of us have to have the ability to take full duty for. Del Rio, 61, admitted to driving the car, which hit a road signal, broke a fence and stopped in a yard early Friday morning round 12:30 a.m. in Madison, based on a Madison (Wis.) police incident report. Witnesses directed officers to Del Rio, who was strolling away from the world and confirmed indicators of impairment, based on the report.

There have been no reported accidents. Del Rio was “launched to a accountable social gathering,” per the incident report.

“I’m grateful to Coach Fickell and the College of Wisconsin for the chance to work with such a gifted teaching and assist workers and among the greatest younger soccer gamers within the nation,” Del Rio stated in a press release Monday. “I’ve determined to step away from my place with the group, to allow them to focus all their consideration on the rest of the season.”

Fickell, who has led Wisconsin to a 5-4 file this season, stated this system doesn’t need “distractions from what the duty is at hand.”

“We’ve obtained a number of weeks left within the season, a number of issues to proceed to combat for and no person desires to remove from that, whether or not it’s me or Jack or anyone inside our soccer program,” Fickell stated. “We’ll transfer ahead from that.”

Del Rio joined the Badgers’ workers forward of the 2024 season after being fired from his position as defensive coordinator with the Washington Commanders in November 2023. He had beforehand spent over a decade as an NFL head coach with the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Oakland Raiders, compiling a 93-94 file. He additionally served in teaching jobs with the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens and New Orleans Saints.

A former standout linebacker at USC, Del Rio performed 11 seasons within the NFL and made the Professional Bowl in 1994.
