Navone stuns defending champ Norrie, into final

Feb 24, 2024, 05:15 PM ET

RIO DE JANEIRO — Defending champion Cameron Norrie has been bundled out of the Rio Open with a shock straight units defeat to qualifier Mariano Navone on Saturday.

The Argentine, 22, beat the second-seeded British participant 6-4, 6-2 to advance to his first tour-level last the place he’ll play compatriot SebastiĂ¡n BĂ¡ez.

Norrie did not provide a lot resistance to the 113th-ranked Navone regardless of having turn out to be the favourite to win the clay-court match once more after Carlos Alcaraz, Stan Wawrinka and NicolĂ¡s Jarry have been all overwhelmed or retired injured.

Within the earlier semifinal, fifth-seeded BĂ¡ez topped his Argentine compatriot Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-0 to advance to his fifth and largest tour-level last.

“Argentina has many gamers and plenty of superb gamers,” the Thirtieth-ranked BĂ¡ez mentioned. “We’re utilizing this [tournament] to climb up, we’re younger. I wish to play in Rio, come to Brazil. After I do not play in opposition to a Brazilian I really feel like a neighborhood.”
