Norrie reaches Rio Open semis with three-set win

RIO DE JANEIRO — Defending champion Cameron Norrie beat Brazil’s Thiago Seyboth Wild 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 on Friday to achieve the semifinals of the Rio Open.

The second-seeded British participant will tackle Argentina’s Mariano Navone on Saturday. Navone overcame Brazil’s 17-year-old sensation João Fonseca 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.

The Twenty third-ranked Norrie turned the favourite to win the clay-court match once more after Carlos Alcaraz retired with a right-ankle damage and Stan Wawrinka and Nicolás Jarry have been defeated.

The British participant mentioned he was excited taking part in towards the group who noticed him win the match final 12 months in a hard-fought remaining towards Alcaraz.

“This was a really enjoyable match and the general public definitely had a fantastic half in that,” Norrie mentioned. “These are the matches you wish to play — at evening, with the general public cheering for you or towards you.”

Two gamers from Argentina gained their quarterfinal matches earlier Friday and can face off for a spot within the remaining of the clay-court match.

Fourth-seeded Francisco Cerundolo beat Serbia’s Dusan Lajovic 3-6, 6-4, 6-4. His semifinal rival can be Sebastian Baez, who beat Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro 6-4, 1-6, 6-2.
