November and CIM Buildup Training Log

November was a month of excessive highs and low lows—arguably each the perfect and worst month of my California Worldwide Marathon (CIM) coaching. Why do the best highs so typically include the bottom lows? I’m purposely scripting this earlier than operating CIM, as a result of it doesn’t matter what occurs, my build-up has been fairly good.

Fast Stats:

Miles Run: 312
Vary of Paces: 6:12-12:30-untimed
Relaxation Days: 5
Swimming: 3500 meters
Races:

Ideas:

As talked about, my build-up for CIM has been fairly good. I’ve constructed health I haven’t seen in a number of years, and I do know that on a very good day I can break 90 minutes in a half marathon or go sub-20 in a 5k once more.

I began November with the Las Vegas Half Marathon. On one of many worst nights of sleep I’ve ever had (due to a live performance that went till 2 a.m.) and with a headwind besides, I ran a 1:31 half marathon. I recovered after which ran a 1:31.03 half marathon in Richmond, though I used to be on the cusp of getting sick.

None of my races had been exponentially “good” or the perfect ever and I had points with every. Las Vegas had a headwind a lot of the means, Richmond I used to be on the cusp of getting sick an the 10k and 5ks, I used to be on the opposite facet of getting sick and getting congested. Nonetheless all of those races are quicker than I ran on the identical time final 12 months. So I can’t complain…to a lot.

HMPV threw me for a loop, leaving me not feeling like myself for a few week. Whereas I’m nonetheless battling some congestion, I’m feeling significantly better than I did every week in the past. Ten days in the past, I used to be almost in tears on the considered operating a marathon as a result of I couldn’t breathe correctly. Now, I can largely breathe, with just a few residual congestion hanging on.

What Have I Executed In another way This Coaching Cycle?

I’ve really raced much less (although, to the untrained eye, it may not appear like it!). This time, I’ve prioritized excessive mileage. Whereas a few of the days had been very simple, I’ve centered on high quality miles and lengthy runs, areas the place I felt my coaching had been missing.

I get pleasure from racing, however life and work have been busy. Plus, I don’t have the posh of popping into native races the place I stay—most races require a 90+ mile drive a method. Whereas it’s a simple drive, it does eat up the weekend. This season, I prioritized a number of key races, and most of them went fairly effectively. At the same time as I used to be recovering from HMPV, I managed to run a 6:30-paced 5k (when my “A” objective for being wholesome was to run beneath 6:27 tempo).

Simply earlier than Las Vegas, I accomplished a exercise I hadn’t performed because the week earlier than I ran a 1:22 half marathon. It was on the treadmill (on account of 30 mph winds outdoors) and consisted of 20×1 minute arduous/simple intervals (arduous at 6:00 min/mile tempo, simple at 8:34 min/mile tempo). It may not appear to be an enormous deal, however I’ve tried to hit that exercise a number of occasions since 2018 with out success. Beforehand, my physique didn’t really feel good, and the hassle all the time felt compelled on the treadmill. This time, I nailed it, and that was motivating. My 22-miler was one other huge confidence booster.

Remaining Ideas

As I head into CIM just some days from now, I do know that no matter occurs, I’ve constructed health and am fitter than I’ve been since 2021. That’s a very good feeling. Clearly I hope to run quicker than LA however CIM is a better course than LA (learn: not simple, however simpler). Los Angeles has most of it’s 900 foot elevation acquire within the final 8 miles. Plus, proper now the climate is trying good, so it’s trying like will probably be a quick day. Am I in PR form? No. I don’t suppose I’m in 3:07.15 form, however I do suppose on a very good day I might run between 3:10-3:15.
