Emma Raducanu overcame a two-hour rain delay to succeed in the quarter-finals of the Washington Open with victory over American Peyton Stearns.
Raducanu, who turned down the possibility to play for Nice Britain on the Olympics, defeated Stearns, ranked 51 on the planet, 7-6 (8-6) 6-2.
Heavy rain began falling as Raducanu served to safe the opening set. After a delay, she clinched the set in a tie-break.
“It is difficult at present, whenever you get rained off at such a giant second like that. It could actually have an effect on the dynamics of the match,” stated Raducanu.
She’s going to face the winner of the match between wildcard Paula Badosa and third seed Liudmila Samsonova.
Raducanu thanked the group for his or her persistence throughout Wednesday’s late-night match.
“I knew it was going to be a tricky match towards Peyton, particularly [with Stearns] taking part in at dwelling,” she added. “It has been run for me in the previous few months, I believe I am constructing some momentum.”
The world quantity 89, who remains to be managing her comeback after wrist and ankle surgical procedure, turned down the invitation to play on the Olympics as a result of she didn’t need to swap again to taking part in on clay at Roland Garros.
