The developer put out a blog post last week announcing that it was time to move on from the zombie apocalypse survival game and focus on developing the third installment, State of Decay 3. The game will still be available to play, but after the upcoming 38th update, there will be no fresh support or content for the game.
The post paid tribute to the game’s journey and its community, stating, ‘’We love making the game you love to play.’’ Undead Labs also made sure to let fans know it plans to ‘’make the greatest zombie survival sim in the franchise’’ with State of Decay 3.
The developer also threw in some answers to frequently asked questions about the move, assuring fans the undead will continue to live on in State of Decay 2 for the foreseeable future.
When Does State of Decay 2 Update 38 Release?
State of Decay 2’s 38th and final update is due later this year. It aims to fix some longstanding issues, implement additional quality-of-life improvements, and permanently unlock seasonal or otherwise previously-gated content, such as Winter outfits and the Wizard Van.
Undead Labs says that there could be a hotfix issued after update 38 is released, but only if bugs arise from the new content. If all goes well, this will be the last piece of content developed for State of Decay 2. State of Decay 2 was first released on Xbox One and PC in May of 2018. It launched to somewhat mixed reviews, with the Xbox version averaging 66% among critics, whilst the PC version fared a little better with a score of 69. But a flurry of updates over the years has helped it to maintain a healthy player base, and no doubt Undead Labs will have learned from the experience and do its best to make State of Decay 3 land as hot as possible.
State of Decay 3 was first announced at the Xbox Showcase 2020, and recently resurfaced with a new cinematic trailer. There’s currently no release date for the game, but given Undead Labs looks to be done with its predecessor, it will hopefully appear soon.
