In a shocking transfer, the Charlotte Hornets have a deal in place to commerce LaMelo Ball, the franchise’s star level guard. The Hornets are set to deal Ball and Josh Inexperienced to the Minnesota Timberwolves for Naz Reid, a 2033 first-round decide, three second-round picks and a collection of first-round decide swaps, a league supply confirmed to The Athletic.

The commerce is a major shake-up for a staff that has been on the upswing. The Hornets completed 44-38 within the common season, no small feat for a franchise that has had only one profitable season over the past decade. They surged within the second half of the season to make the Japanese Convention’s Play-In Match, beating the Miami Warmth in an time beyond regulation thriller because of Ball’s last-second layup. The choice to commerce Ball, particularly now, comes as a shock. Ball, 24, averaged 20.1 factors and seven.1 assists in 2025-26, his fewest factors per recreation since his rookie season, when he gained the NBA’s Rookie of the 12 months award. He made the All-Star staff the following season. That helped him earn a rookie max extension, on which he has three years and roughly $130.7 million remaining.

With Ball gone, they’ll every get bigger roles, as will Christian Anderson Jr., whom the Hornets took No. 18 in Tuesday’s draft. The deal is probably the most audacious transaction but by a comparatively new entrance workplace that has made a number of astute, if smaller, decisions to this point.
