Avalanche Deaths in Europe Rise Again

1st April 2026

The headline figures are usually not good with 135 fatalities to date this winter in comparison with a seasonal common of 104. The general image and evaluation is extra complicated. NEW

Within the newest incident a 41-year previous Italian skier, Federico Giubilato, died in Marchkopf in Austria final weekend.

His snowboarding good friend dug himself out as they had been snowboarding off piste collectively and alerted the authorities as he frantically dug for his good friend.

The rescue group arrived in two helicopters about half an hour later.

It took an extra half-hour to dig Federico out.

As soon as his physique was discovered he was pronounced useless on the scene.

He was a mechanical engineer with a level from the College of Padua.

One other human tragedy with a lot extra behind the bald statistic of one other fatality.

This winter, since October 1st, 135 individuals have died in avalanches in Europe in line with the European Avalanche Warning Companies:

Italy – 38France – 31Austria – 29Switzerland – 15Spain – 8Slovakia – 6Slovenia – 3Andorra – 2Poland – 1Norway – 1

There have been no recorded fatalities in The Czech Republic, Iceland, Sweden and Scotland.

The Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Panorama Analysis, WSL, has revealed its newest info this week on avalanche incidents in Switzerland.

244 individuals had been caught in 171 avalanches this winter as much as the tip of March.

These figures are effectively above the typical for the final ten years, which is 182 individuals recorded in 127 accidents.

Not one of the buried individuals had been on marked ski slopes.

9 had been recorded in touring terrain with six in off-piste areas.

An unstable snowpack coated a lot of the Swiss Alps within the first half of winter.

After an early onset of winter on the finish of November, the climate remained dry and sunny till January.

The ensuing skinny snow cowl was closely reworked and fashioned a really weak, unstable base.

Based on the WSL, winters with a pronounced ‘previous snow’ drawback are significantly accident-prone.

The hazard is usually not simple to recognise, even for consultants.

As well as, avalanches that begin in deep layers of the snowpack are normally dangerously giant.

The Swiss cantons of Valais, Ticino and Graubünden had been significantly affected by this case.

The winter of 2025/26 was just like the earlier winter, too heat and characterised initially by effectively below-average snow depths.

New snowfall totals throughout Switzerland solely reached 50% to 75% of the long-term common.

The snow deficit was best within the east of Switzerland.

The overwhelming majority of victims had been caught in wind slab avalanches or collapses linked to persistent weak layers buried deep inside the snow, usually triggered by skiers after recent downfalls.

We’ve got reported on the accidents on PlanetSKI throughout the winter:

Most occurred in a concentrated 2-month interval from late December to late February.

In France 30 of the 31 complete fatalities had been between twenty sixth December and twenty second February.

Although the quantity is above the annual common it’s not outdoors the anticipated parameters, that vary from 60 to 140 relying on the general stability of the snowpack.

Variations in avalanche fatalities are very climate dependent.

What’s attention-grabbing this winter is the variety of experiences skiers caught – ski patrollers, guides, off piste instructors, skilled ski tourers and members of alpine golf equipment.

As winter attracts to a detailed the danger stays.

There was recent snow this week and on Wednesday 1st April there was a  ‘appreciable’ threat – Stage 3 – in areas of the Alps.
