Grand Valley State Athletics introduced the passing of longtime GVSU swimming & diving coach, Dewey Newsome on Wednesday, Dec. 27.
Newsome, who was inducted into the GVSU Athletics Corridor of Fame in 2010, started his profession at Grand Valley State because the Director of Aquatics in 1984. Nonetheless, he shortly grew to become the College’s first-ever head swimming & diving coach and held that place till his retirement in 2007.
Newsome mentored 110 student-athletes that earned Tutorial All-GLIAC honors and the boys’s and ladies’s squads mixed to earn 36 group educational awards from the School Swim Coaches Affiliation. As well as, 12 Lakers earned 28 Scholar All-American honors. Dewey coached 51 student-athletes that claimed GLIAC titles and 30 student-athletes that earned over 140 All-America honors throughout his profession. Newsome’s 2004-05 males’s group captured GVSU’s first-ever GLIAC swimming & diving group title. The Laker males completed among the many prime three within the remaining GLIAC standings 19 occasions throughout his profession, whereas the Laker ladies positioned among the many prime three 14 occasions.
